This deciduous Chaenomeles x superba 'Crimson and Gold' is a spreading shrub, with spiny branches bearing glossy, ovate leaves. In the late winter, this flowering quince produces red, cup shaped flowers with golden anthers, on leafless stems, which look particularly striking when trained up a wall or fence. The aromatic, green-yellow fruit that follows in autumn is traditionally used to make preserves and jellies (see note below).
